You Have to Challenge Yourself to Grow
Hey everyone!
I recently started a new job as a data analytics consultant (which is so mouthful I hate to say it). But you have to go through 6 months of training before you get assigned to an actual project.
So, I’ve been learning fancy stuff like business modelling and logical thinking in the past couple weeks.
Although the training is done via online, it is intense and hard. You have an hour of lunch break, but they make your brain work hard from 9 to 5.
I hated it at first because it’s exhausting and difficult.
But I remembered something David Perell said in his podcast:
“The fact is, difficult experiences are the transformative ones…
You never go on a beach holiday and say, ‘Wow. That changed my life’…
After all, the best bosses challenge your limits, the best teachers challenge your beliefs, and the best books challenge your assumptions”
If you want to grow, you have to challenge yourself. You have to go through difficult experiences.
But, if you run away from them because you’re scared of failures - which is called kakorrhaphiophobia, aka fixed mindset - you’re going to miss out on lots of valuable opportunities.
This is something I have to tell myself repeatedly whenever I feel like quitting or running away.
Is there something you often tell yourself as well?
Shu ;)
Personal Update
As you may know already, I have reached 1000 subscribers on my Youtube channel!!!
I just want to say thank you so much to everyone. The most amazing thing about starting my own channel is the people I get to connect with. I get to talk with wonderful people around the world and I love sharing ideas with you guys.
Also, big thank you to those who became my patron! It’s still hard to believe that there are people who’re willing to pay to support my work. So, thank you so much!
What I’ve Been Reading:
I’ve just finished reading Awareness by Anthony de Mello. It’s one of the most eye-opening books I’ve read. I have so many highlights from the book that it took me ages to process them into evergreen notes.
Here’s one of my favourite highlights:
When you say of someone, “He’s a communist,” understanding has stopped at that moment. You slapped a label on him. “She’s a capitalist.” Understanding has stopped at that moment. You slapped a label on her, and if the label carries undertones of approval or disapproval, so much the worse!
How are you going to understand what you disapprove of, or what you approve of, for that matter? All of this sounds like a new world, doesn’t it? No judgment, no commentary, no attitude: one simply observes, one studies, one watches, without the desire to change what is. Because if you desire to change what is into what you think should be, you no longer understand.
What I’ve Been Listening to:
David Perell’s new podcast - The Write of Passage Podcast - is filled with gems.
Each episode is 1-3 minutes long, but you get to learn the power of writing and why you should share your work online.
What I’ve Been Watching:
I’m a huge fan of The Office (US). So, when I heard John Krasinski (who plays Jim in the show) started his Youtube channel, it took me a second to hit that subscribe button.
His videos are funny and heart-warming too!
This Week's Video - How I Collect Information
I’ve just published a new video last night about my workflow of collecting information. It’s a short video as usual, but might be useful for some people :)
