Life Is Too Short to Spend It in a State of Anger
Hey everyone!Hope you’re having a fantastic weekend.
I’ve recently moved back to Tokyo from the UK and been pretty busy preparing for my new job starting from the next month.
On the plane to Tokyo, I was listening to the podcast by Naval Ravikant. If you’re into the tech industry, you probably know him. He is an entrepreneur/investor/philosopher, and I think he is one of the most persuasive and eloquent people in the world, which is one of the reasons why I love listening to him talk.
In his podcast, he mostly talks about happiness, mindfulness, and how to build wealth. Every episode is full of absolute gems, but one of many things I learned from his podcast is about anger.
He says: “anger is a hot coal you hold in your hands while waiting to throw it at somebody else.”
For many people, getting angry or annoyed at things that we don’t like is the default reaction. But is it really worth it? Would getting angry improve the situation?
The answer is almost always No.
To make things worse, you end up harming yourself by getting angry. When you’re mad, you can’t help but think about the people or the things that annoyed you. You keep thinking about how to take revenge on them.
As a result, you fail to focus on what truly matters. You fail to live in the present moment. This is what Naval means by “anger is a hot coal you hold in your hands”.
Moreover, if you’re constantly angry, you will become a torment to those around you. Who wants to hang out with a person like that?
Like Seneca says, why not instead “make yourself a person to be loved by all while you live and missed when you have made your departure?”
I hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend :)
